Your time in India

About 21 days in Delhi, day by day

Plans leave time to recover so you fly home with your surgeon's sign-off, usually around day 18–21, once your surgeon signs you off.

  1. Arrive, tests, meet your surgeonDays 1–2

We meet you at the airport. X-rays, blood tests and a heart check, then a talk with the surgeon and anaesthetist.

  2. SurgeryDay 3

Usually under a spinal anaesthetic. Most people stand with help later that day or the next.

  3. In hospitalDays 4–7

Physio every day: walking with a frame, then stairs. The team watches the wound and your pain.

  4. Recover where you're stayingDays 8–18

A serviced apartment with a lift, near the hospital. Physio visits, stitches out, swelling settles.

  5. Final check and fly homeDays 19–21

A last X-ray and review, your fit-to-fly letter and records, and wheelchair help at the airport.

Is this right for you?

Who it suits

Before you book anything, a surgeon at an accredited hospital reviews your records to confirm it's safe to travel.

Usually a good fit

  • Arthritis in the knee that X-rays show is severe.
  • Pain that makes walking, stairs or sleep hard, most days.
  • You've already tried painkillers, injections, physio or weight loss.
  • You're facing a long wait or a large bill at home.

Wait, or get care at home

  • Any infection, in the knee, on the skin around it, or elsewhere.
  • Heart or lung problems that aren't under control yet.
  • Poor blood flow to the leg.

Risks

What can go wrong, and what helps

Every operation has risks, wherever it's done. These are the main ones. Your surgeon will explain how they apply to you.

The main risks

  • Blood clots

In the leg (DVT) or, rarely, the lungs. Long flights add to the risk, which is why plans allow about three weeks before flying.

  • Infection

In the wound or, more seriously, around the implant. It can show up after you're home, so know the warning signs.

  • Stiffness or ongoing pain

Some people don't get the movement or comfort they hoped for. Physio makes a real difference.

  • Implant problems

Loosening, wear or dislocation (hips), sometimes years later, which may need further surgery.

  • Nerve or blood vessel injury

Rare, but possible with any joint or spine operation.

What a planned trip does about travel

  • A written opinion first. A surgeon reviews your reports before you book anything, and can say no.
  • Time to recover before flying. Plans include days in India after discharge, and you only fly with your surgeon's fit-to-fly letter.
  • Clot prevention for the flight. Your surgeon advises on stockings, medicines and moving around. We can book aisle seats and wheelchair help.
  • Records your doctor can use. Discharge summary, scans, operation notes and implant details in English, before you leave.
  • Follow-up from home. Video check-ups with your surgeon, and a named person to call if something worries you.

Questions to ask your surgeon

  1. 1.How many of these operations do you do a year?
  2. 2.Which implant will you use, and why?
  3. 3.What's your plan to prevent blood clots, including for the flight?
  4. 4.When can I fly, and what should I do on the plane?
  5. 5.What would make you delay my operation?

Technique & technology

How it's done

What you can expect at large accredited hospitals in Delhi NCR. Your surgeon will explain which approach suits you.

01

Robot-assisted surgery, where offered

Some hospitals use a robotic arm (such as Mako) to help place the implant. It costs more. Your surgeon will tell you whether it makes a difference for your knee.

02

Muscle-sparing approaches

Many surgeons use approaches that avoid cutting through the thigh muscle, which can make the first weeks of walking easier.

03

Implants you can look up

Your quote names the implant. You leave with its make, model and serial numbers so a surgeon at home can check them.

Questions

Questions about total knee replacement

Which implants are used?

Usually the same makers used in the US and UK, such as Stryker, Zimmer Biomet and DePuy Synthes. Your written quote names the implant, and your discharge papers list its model and serial numbers.

Is it safe to fly home after a knee replacement?

Long flights after leg surgery raise the risk of blood clots, which is why plans allow about three weeks. Before you fly, your surgeon checks the wound and signs a fit-to-fly letter, and will usually advise compression stockings, a blood thinner and walking around on the plane. We can book wheelchair help at both airports.

How do I know the surgeon is experienced?

Ask us. We pass on the surgeon's training, registration and how many of these operations they do a year, as the hospital tells us. You can also speak to the surgeon on a video call before you decide.

What about physio once I'm home?

You leave with an exercise plan and your surgical notes in English, so a physiotherapist or doctor at home can carry on where the hospital left off.

Planning this from abroad?

Prices are planning ranges from published hospital packages and cost research (2025–26), not quotes. Day plans are typical; your surgeon sets the real dates. General information, not medical advice. Last reviewed October 2026.
